Jack Jones is the best singer in the world

My Dad dragged me to this concert when I was a surly teenager and I really didnt appreciate quite what a wonderful favour he'd done me at the time. I do remember being tremendously touched by Vincent and singing along to AP.

Now I’m thinking about Shawn Colvin and how much I love her and continue to think about her. It just doesn’t stop. But it’s ok. I’m ok today. I’m so grateful for this quiet, peaceful, blessed little sanctuary. I need to go grocery shopping but might put it off a couple more days. Not sure. Depends on how hungry I get I guess. Peace I’m reminded of what Leonard Cohen said about his reputation as a ‘ladies man’ to paraphrase from a poor memory: “it irks me sometimes to think about my reputation as a ‘ladies man’ especially during any of the 10,000 nights I spent alone…” Leonard Cohen was deeply aware of his faults, his humanness, his brokenness. I think the full body of his work makes it clear that he adored women even as he idealized them. Where he found himself to have lived contrary to those ideals, he grieved openly in his work. But in the final analysis it’s clear to me that in any fight to protect the personhood of women from the assaults of callous objectification you would find Field Commander Cohen at the front lines bloodied and defiant. I think that Leonard Cohen found himself stuck sometimes between his awe of the feminine soul and his deep longing to perfectly express the narrative of romantic love. His writing clearly shows that he sought reconciliation at every such crossroad. But never did he come close to presenting himself as anyone’s champion, although many continue to see him in this light. He was not a martyr either. He counted himself among the broken and the lost. All of his songs served as beacons by which others who found themselves adrift in the deep voids of our society’s blindness and ignorance might find him. Somewhere between the deepest human misery and the shining sun he sought companionship and real love. I think his line from ‘Suzanne’, says it beautifully, where Jesus surveys the human condition from his ‘lonely wooden tower’…”but he himself was broken long before the sky would open…” “forsaken, almost human, he sank beneath your wisdom like a stone…” Leonard Cohen held the wisdom of women in such high regard that he, and even Jesus, only could sink beneath it in ultimate surrender. He sank beneath the wisdom of Suzanne’s simple goodness and kindness, in her rejection of the status quo and her embrace of the mystical and spiritual over the material. A soul like Leonard Cohen’s could not exist in a place where such sensitivity is groped, mauled and mocked. The timing of his passing and his final message to us were perfectly parallel to his inspired life and divinely poetic. Rest in peace Leonard Cohen.
